Very disappointed in my delivery. Fried dumplings were burnt. Steamed vegetable dish was almost entirely broccoli and cost a whopping $9.35. Not one mushroom to be found. I also ordered the dry sauteed string beans. This may be my misunderstanding, but I thought that would mean my beans would be somewhat firm like the ones I get at My Thai. The only good item was the free Chinese donuts. See pictures.

The General Tso's and the Sesame chicken is disgusting. The only reason I've kept ordering from here is because, just like everyone else says, it's cheap and convenient. One time I think I found remnants of a chicken foot mixed in, and overall the chicken is very low quality. I often pause and wonder mid-meal if what I am eating is actually chicken... Please just spend a few more dollars somewhere else.

I used to get General Tso's Chicken from here consistently. However, in recent months it has gone downhill in terms of quality. As recently as the fall, it used to be served with a lot of sauce and decent pieces of chicken. Now, in about half the time I've been ordering it in the past few months, the General Tso's Chicken is either completely dried up with virtually no sauce, or it is of the good quality that is used to offer consistently. So it's roughly a 50% chance for me that the food would decent Those aren't good enough odds to be spending 7+ dollars on. I'm not sure if they added a new cook or not but I have taken my business elsewhere in hope the food isn't a gamble anymore.

This is my favorite place to order Chinese delivery for their Sesame Chicken and their General Tso's. However, I've never actually tried anything else on their menu. When I talked my coworkers into ordering from there, they didn't like their food, so if you don't want to order Sesame Chicken or General Tso's, I can't guarantee anything. The food comes fast and is well-priced! The meals come with a choice of soup, eggroll, or chicken wings. The only one of those that I've liked are the chicken wings - the soup was bland and the eggroll mostly just tasted like pepper with cabbage.

I constantly hear about how good Uncle Chen's is so I finally got around to ordering some this year. I'm a bit of a picky eater, so I stuck with the tried and true General Tso's. Uncle Chen has your food ready really quickly! As others have said, you do get a lot of food too. However, out of the two times I've ordered from here, both of my meals were ruined by biting into a strange, chewy, purple-colored piece of chicken. It's just disgusting. Maybe Uncle Chen needs to slow down a little bit? Although I'm batting 1.000 here, I have thought of giving the Uncle one more shot, merely due to connivence factors. Maybe I should try the beef instead next time...

Looks like most reviews have covered the essentials here, so to recap: a) Uncle Chen's has HUGE portions. Even the dreaded dinner special (dreaded as in "oh no, it's a special? does that mean I'm going to get a teeny tiny serving of sesame chicken and then a boatload of rice plus a spring roll and will be expected to find it 'special'??" None of that here.) b) The huge portions are CHEAP. c) You always know what to expect (i.e.: the food is consistent). d) The sweet and sour soup is actually very tasty, as are the dumplings. Mmm. Now for the non-recap portion of the review. Our last visit to Uncle Chen's was following a Friday nigh of cowbell playing at the Phirst. We called, ordered, and walked over to pick it up (re-livin' the college days, I suppose). As expected, UC's was totally bumpin' on a Friday night, with phones ringing off the hook, drivers scrambling around with bags full of fried rice and the like. Since our food wasn't ready yet, my friend's hubby and I hung around with the staff, took a phone order or two (Shelley from Runkle Hall -- I'm sorry.) and got to enjoy some behind the scenes action. Needless to say, we left with some great food, and an even greater appreciation for the craziness that the staff puts up with working in a college town. If you're looking for good take out, especially if you live near campus, Uncle Chen's won't let you down!

If you've taken the time to go on the internet and research a Chinese Food place that is famous for being quick, cheap, and caters primarily to the college crowd, you probably are skeptical about the quality at about Uncle Chens. I was skeptical, and decided to find out for myself whether or not Uncle Chens really is a good value. I recently ordered the General Tso's dinner special late after work and picked up the order on my way home. My order took about 10 minutes to prepare and was ready and waiting for me when I arrived at Uncle Chens. My order cost around $8 with tax which is very reasonable since most places back home seem to charge $10 and up for dinner specials. The dinner special came with a vegetable egg roll and a fortune cookie, which is about standard for any chinese takeout place. Chen's is famous for offering huge portions and with my order they did not disappoint. The takeout container was absolutely bursting with rice and general tso's, and seemed to be almost double what a normal portion would be at Chinese restaraunt. Since I am not a fan of reheating leftover chinese food I made a valiant effort at finishing the entire meal but came up short in the end...Chen's won. With Chen's you definitely get value with the dinner special, there is no argueing that. As far as the quality is concerned, Chen's is just as good if not better than your average Chinese takeout shop. In order to have delicious General Tso's you need two things: crispy chicken and flavorful sauce. I am happy to say that Chen's delivered in both categories. The chicken was extremely crispy, even after being covered in a plethora of sauce and sitting 15 minutes during my drive home. The sauce, which I had ordered in extra spicey, was very flavorful and actually pretty spicey. Ultimately, if you were to ask me if Chen's was the best Chinese food I ever ate, I would have to say "Nope". But, if you were to ask me if Chen's was the best chinese food that I ever ate that cost less than $8 and was ordered after 11pm, the answer would be a resounding YES....and honestly, I think that's the whole point of Uncle Chen's.

As a new grad student this year, I've been working my way through all the Chinese take-out places in town, and this is so far my favorite, by quite a bit. Hot and sour soup was the only one I've found so far that was adequately both hot and sour, and it was also nicely thick. Ma-Po Tofu was also appropriately spicy and not too greasy because the tofu is steamed instead of fried. I wish it came with more vegetables, but it was quite all right with only the little bits of carrots and peas. Good ratio of sauce to tofu, and excellent ratio of tofu to rice. I'll definitely order again and try other entrees!

I remember the good 'ole days. Or rather, the so-so days for me on a personal note. Sure State College living is on the dull side if you prefer your dinners without the elusive hang over.. but every once in a while you find a fantastic hole in the wall place to grab cheap grub. Uncle Chen's is just about the best you can get in town (other than the Beef Bowl on College Ave) and the price is affordable for the even the poorest of students. The General Tso's chicken is simply beautiful: crispy to perfection with a unique sweet and spicy taste that knocks your socks off. It resembles hot wings with an asian kick. I love the "fried" rice- not greasy in the least and seasoned with soy sauce (just how I prefer it). The greatest dish? Their beef lo mien. Seriously. The huge strips of seasoned, grilled beef are unbelievable. Having moved from State College, I miss this place. My boyfriend and I have yet to find a comparable take out.

We were too tired to cook the other night so we ordered Uncle Chen's delivery. The portions are nice and large, and the food was hot, so we were happy! I got Chicken and Cashews, which honestly I've had better, but was pretty good, and the Family Tofu, which could have had more vegetables. (obviously I did not eat both, and they were great for lunch the next day!) Matt got the black pepper beef which was a little too black peppery for my taste but he enjoyed it. The egg drop soup was delish (and super cheap!). All in all I would recommend this for inexpensive simple Chinese take-out or delivery. If I could have given it 3.5 stars I would have. :)

For PSU Chinese food it is hard to argue with chen's. Always will deliver huge portions in record time. Never will have a better bang for your buck and good enough dinner specials to satisfy anybody

  • Prakit D.

The food come in a huge portion! Most items on the menu are much better than average Chinese take out and definitely the best in State College. Now that I graduated, every time I visit the town I'd try to get one meal from Uncle Chen's. Some of my favorites are General Tso's and Beef with broccoli. Their soup is pretty good too. Very fast delivery and you get the bang for your buck.

American Chinese food. I've had better from a buffet. BUT ITS SO CHEAP.

  • Wes F.

I am a fan of Chinese food. I've eaten it in several cities from legitimate Chinese restaurants, take out, delivery, mall foot courts, etc. I would have to say though, that this is not very good. Its not the worst, but its pretty low on the list. It's edible though, and there aren't many options at PSU. The upside is that it's cheap, fast, and they deliver. So, because it is cheap, generous portion sizes, lack of competition, and they deliver faster than any place I know, it somewhat redeems itself. By college standards, this is superb stuff when compared to Ramen. But I wouldn't recommend this place unless you are dying for some Chinese and don't want to travel for hours.

Yelp! After my a-bit-brutal last Uncle Chen review (see below), I received a call from the owner (on my cellphone) who told me he had read my review on this site, and matched my nickname to their online orders. That startled me a bit, but okay. He apologized for the behavior of the employee, and explained that she could not discriminate between my building (where drivers generally come up to individuals apartments) and others downtown (where they cannot come up because they don't have anywhere to park). After explaining that he was sorry for her behavior and that they would continue to deliver to my door in the future, he apologized again and offered me some meals "on the house". This is textbook management of dissatisfied customers. Offer an honest apology, affirm that the mistake isn't going to be repeated, and offer repairs. Well done. I got the free food, and it was good :-) Would I have received the same treatment if this review hadn't been written? Probably not. But so many businesses in town treat students (or young looking folks, like me) like crap; I sure appreciated getting the call and seeing that a business in town honestly cares enough to make an effort to correct their mistakes. Competition among restaurants is tough in town, and I wish them all the best and will most likely order from them again.

This is the place to order General Tso's chicken. Very big portions & cheap price. There's nothing fancy about this place. It's all take-out or delivery, no dine-in option.

  • Shannon L.

This may not be some people's favorite Chinese food, but I think they do a fantasy job with the traditional "American" Chinese food items. If you stray too far through the menu, you might be disappointed, but they have great general tso's, lo mein, sweet & sour chicken and shrimp, and fried rice of course. It's pretty cheap and they have fast delivery.

It's all about managing expectations. By that I mean it's cheap Chinese food. Anybody who complains about the food I would argue is a moron. For $6-$8 you can get enough food to feed 2 - 3 people... (or one very hungry college student) and still have leftovers. Is it particularly good? No but it definitely leaves me feeling full and satisfied. But then again is any Chinese place where 3 pounds of General TSO's chicken and rice costs just $6 particularly good? With regards to delivery time it's the same deal... Try ordering on a Saturday at 7pm on a football weekend it's going to take 90 minutes. Should they get more drivers? Probably. Can they find enough people to work at delivery driver wages on Saturday night when their friends are all out partying? It's probably difficult. By comparison order from them on a Tuesday evening in summer, and your food might be there in 20 minutes or less. I've tried ordering from both their site and through Orderup.com . I've found that generally speaking they are more likely to receive the order through orderup.com than their site. My guess is I'm around 2/3 ordering through their site and 9/10 ordering through orderup.com , but that is just a guess

Going around State College looking for that hole-in-the wall that made great food and I thought this was the place, especially if they claim to have "The Best General Tso's in town!" So I thought I would give this place a try. I came here a couple of time to try the following: Fried Chicken Wing: Gross! It was dry, overcooked, and overfried. It was so overfried that the chicken took on flavors from the cooking oil. It also lack any creative flavor, unless they count "old oil" as a flavoring. Sweet & Sour Pork: I am always on my search for that perfect Sweet & Sour Pork. This place did not have it. What was served to me was dried, battered pork pieces with no discernible seasoning that was drenched in the sweet & sour sauce. And that's it. No carrots. No green bell peppers. No onions. No pineapples. Not even sliced tomatoes! Just the battered pork "jerky" and sauce. Disaster. The Best General Tso's Chicken in town!: Against my better judgement, I returned to Uncle Chen's to give their General Tso's Chicken a try. After all, it is "the best General Tso's Chicken in TOWN!" Mind you, this is the first time in my life that I've ever order this dish from any chinese restaurant so I had nothing to compare this dish to. So I ordered this with the hope that this was their signature dish that has kept this business going. Got home and took a few bites and come to realize that this dish was no different from the Sweet & Sour Pork I ordered the other day. The only exception was it was a different protein and a different sweetened sauce. So I am not sure why this was considered the "best in town". My only explanation is that you need to be drunk in order to appreciate this dish? But who knows and who cares as I have no desire to come back to this place. So overall my experience wasn't good. Another restaurant that has reinforce my notion that most Chinese Restaurants in State College sucks, as least the ones near the Penn State campus. I realize this is cheap food and that you do get more bang for your buck, and that it can feed 2 to 3 people, and that you can have leftovers, but for me this isn't the kind of food I desire to spend my money on, share with friends, or have leftovers for the next day. Maybe when I get drunk and I happen to be in the area, I might..... nah. So that's my take on it.

Food is mediocre at best, way worse than a lot of other places in town. Dealbreaker tho is the service, some of the rudest, worst employees anywhere in SC, avoid @ all costs

  • Sara M.

I'm sad to say this is the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I decided to order Uncle Chen's since it was significantly cheaper than Golden Ladle or Fuji & Jade (where I get my usual fix). However cheaper definitely isn't better. I ordered Ma Po tofu, which is my go to dish, and it was just so bland! Tofu tastes like whatever you cook it in, so if it is not in a good sauce, it basically tastes like nothing. So tofu + white rice with a boring sauce = not very satisfying. The portion was huge, and the delivery was fast, so if you want a lot of fast cheap food, this is the place. However if you're looking for a delicious meal.. Do not go here. Sorry Uncle Chen's.

Ordered for delivery about 11AM to beat lunch rush. They call me 10 minutes later to say they're out of the drink I ordered (and asked if I wanted a more expensive one) and said they would need to change the type of rice because they didn't have the other kind made (?!). Then they call again about 11:35, I assume to tell me they were here, but instead to tell me (over a half hour after my order was placed) that they were cancelling my order because, quote, "they were kinda busy and I was too far away". For the record, I am located about a 5 minute drive from their location, *maybe* 10 if traffic is extra bad, and I had known people to order them from farther away. No apology offered, no asking if I could wait longer, just "we're busy, so we're not bringing your food". The food here is decent but nothing special (the "Best General Tso" thing is a total lie, theirs is awful), but the service is disgraceful. There are plenty of other better Chinese places in State College, so it's almost certainly worth avoiding this one and their incompetent staff. EDIT: And, judging by that reply, they'd rather just complain about people trying to ruin their business instead of actually address problems or, here's a thought, maybe APOLOGIZE. I wouldn't have bothered with a negative review if I had received any sort of apology, even a "sorry about the inconvenience" on the phone. But I didn't. Even now, if the reply to this review had included ANY indication that they were sorry I had such a negative experience at their expense, I'd maybe consider removing/changing the review. They would rather just complain about negative reviews than do anything to rectify the situation. Here's a tip, if you want better reviews, EARN THEM. If you would just apologize and act professionally, my review would reflect that and read more favorably. But if you are rude to me and do nothing but ignore my complaints and discredit them, the review will reflect that as well.

In town for Setsucon at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, who instead of having menus for delivery uses orderup.com . Took advantage of the 10% off for first time customers. First issue, orderup menu layout sucks, but we got in a large order of around $80. Then things went down from here. Upon the arrival of the order, it's messed up. We're missing at least two main dishes and four egg rolls. Due to the large order it took a while to figure out what was missing and it took two of us on the phone to even convey this information to the employee who was working the phone at Uncle Chen's that night. They did eventually send us most of our missing items, but the time and stress of this messup can't justify the large amounts of food we were provided. Overall a poor experience that left several people very frustrated. What's surprising is out of all the conventions we attend, State College has some of the worst Chinese food experiences we've had.

VEGAN REVIEW Don't let this place's hilarious but questionable web address fool you, vegan-foods eater: this is a wonderful place to eat some tofu-containing meals late, late, late at night. Food is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars... but, man, where else are you going to get your maybe-not-sober self some vegan fast foods with tofu in 'em? We showed up because I was a meal behind and it was about 11 pm. I will tell you about the food in a minute, don't fret, but first I am going to set the stage for our visit: This take-out haven was, on the evening of our meal, inhabited by the owners' five-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter, in addition to a well-used and well-utilized train playset. Our conversation was _delightful_. Joseph, in case you were wondering, is pretty excited about kindergarten and has recently learned to spin dice like tops. His sister's main interests at this point are disassembling her brother's train creations and shaking objects that rattle. If I were a college student, I would be pretty stoked to see anybody who wasn't a university employee or between the ages of 17 and 23. Even as an adult-type person, it was pretty good. Okay, yes, the food: we got a carton so full of Bean Curd with Chinese Pickled Pepper that we could hardly pry the thing open. We watched the cook prepare it, too, and it was a very fancy thing. Full of oil, yes, and deeelicious. The broccoli dish we got was okay, but this dish blew it out of the water, in the middle of Drinkytime in good old Happy Valley.

This is touted by others as cheap and greasy. Well they got the greasy part right. The food was gross, but not any cheaper than other equally greasy but way more delicious Chinese fare in the State College and Bellefonte area. I ordered from Uncle Chen's using lionmenus.com . According to their restaurant info, they were voted best General Tso's. I figured it would probably be a safe bet right? Wrong. The chicken was dry and sauce was think and congealed and tasted too much of sesame oil, with no hints of garlic, ginger, or any other spices other than MSG and sodium. I also ordered the sweet and sour chicken dinner (complete with fried rice and an egg roll), crab rangoons, and fried donuts. The crab rangoons had hardly any filling, the sweet and sour chicken was dry and tasteless, and the sweet and sour sauce tasted like a medicinal cough syrup laced jelly, that left a pink stain on my arm where I spilled it accidentally. The fried rice and egg roll though not the greatest weren't that bad, my dog enjoyed the rice very much. The best part of the entire dinner was the fried donuts, but really how bad could a sugary lump of fried dough be? I feel bad saying all this though, because the guy that I talked to when I called (I had to call them back after they called me to see if I would still be there when they delivered, nice of them to ask), seemed really nice. I know some people absolutely love Uncle Chen's, but for my $26, I'd rather go somewhere else.

Their food is no better than any other Chinese restaurant around here and their service is absolutely terrible. We ordered 2 dinners through Order Up at 6:14 pm. After waiting an hour, my husband called and the man answering the phone said the delivery driver was on their way and would be there shortly. He explained that the reason they were running late was because a promotion they were running and the weather. While it was raining, it was no more than a drizzle and the promotion they were running wasn't working for Order Up orders. It was 7:46 when the man arrived, and he didn't apologize or attempt to explain why he was so late. I asked him if we could have our food discounted or free due to the long wait, and he started walking away. I told him I wanted him to call his manager, and he did, saying into the phone "The people on ___ Ave want free food, hung up, then said "have a good night" as he walked away. No trying to talk to the customer at all. Being that we were starving and wanted our food, I gave in and paid for it. I will not be ordering from here again.

Let's be realistic about Uncle Chen's: it's cheap, greasy Chinese food. Don't try to compare it to some Chinese restaurant with tablecloths and linen napkins because that's not what it is. It is fill-you-up-for-pennies, lazy man's grub. And I love it. When I was a student at Penn State I walked to class uphill both ways for 16 miles in the snow.... Wait, no.... I would order Uncle Chen's every Sunday evening with my boyfriend and his roommates and veg out watching TV. It was great. I loved the cheap dinner specials and pigging out on tons of food before facing a new school week. There was nothing fancy about what we ordered, but it served its purpose. On a recent visit back to PSU we ordered up some Uncle Chen's. Being vegetarian now, our orders were a little modified but similar to what we used to get. I got the sautéed vegetables and my husband (the boyfriend from my college days) ordered orange tofu. It was pretty much as I remembered it: greasy, filling Chinese food. I really liked mine... the husband thought his was ok. In all, I still think it's a solid place for a cheap, bad-for-you meal. After seeing all the reviews for fast delivery, I wonder why they didn't like me and made me wait 45 minutes for mine. Oh well, it was worth it.

Its cheap but you get what you pay for...not really good food. The general tsos chicken was gloppy and hard. I ordered sweet and sour soup from them and it tasted like cleaning product. I had to throw it out, it was not good.

like most, I enjoy a fair share of americanized chinese takeout food. Uncle Chen's is one of the places that I order from regularly, delivery of course. overall, decent chinese takeout options. likes: fast delivery. cash back on lionmenus to use towards a future purchase. good portions. tasty general tso's. dislikes: horrible steamed rice, what type of grain is that? hot and sour soup is way too thick.

PROS: Fast delivery, hot and sour soup. Chicken chow mein dishes. CONS: Everything but the chow mein dishes.

The sweet and sour pork was absolutely terrible. The soup was just a giant mix of salt and corn starch. Not even close to real Chinese food. It's not even that cheap either.

As I was staying in State College for work, I found this place listed in the room guide book. I went to the website listed and ordered my food, and thought this was nice being able to place my order online. When doing so I was told receive a 10% discount for first time order, and the order would arrive in 45 Min. Over an hour after I ordered my food it finally arrived, and so did my bill. I ordered something simple, Shrimp and snow peas and fried dumplings. The dumplings were not light and crisp and were real heavy on the dough. And the Shrimp and snow peas, well let's just rename and old classic "Where's the Shrimp?" The food was mediocore at best, the discounts NONE (False advertising.), and over an hour to get my food. Just giving my .02 cents worth. I'll let you make your own decision. But from the looks of it this place seems to be hit or miss. Reviews started out good, but seem to have gone down hill.

Good general Tso but make sure you get it in the morning/early afternoon. I tried it late afternoon and night time, it was gross. There was a thick film of nastiness covering over cooked chicken. Ewwww.

Now I've had a lot of chinese food in my day and I can't understand why so many people love this place. Thankfully I had discovered other better Chinese long before I gave Uncle Chen's a try. I stopped after class one day to grab either a lunch or dinner, don't remember which. It came with friend rice, wonton soup and I believe I got General Tso's chicken. The fried rice completely lacked any type of flavor, it was hands down the most bland fried rice I've ever had. The wonton soup was right along the same lines, no flavor, watered down, like dish water. The General Tso's was overcooked making ti tough, dry and way too cripsy (ie. burnt) Maybe I just had a meal on an off day but it was enough to be done and done at Uncle Chen's. Just to note, this is the only one star review I've made so far.

I've been here four times, so I think that's a decent sampling size from which to judge the food this place. First, the pro's: (1) they're open late; (2) they're cheap; (3) they have very generously-sized portions. But quantity rarely trumps quality, imho. While most dishes were sub-par to average on the Americanized Chinese-food scale, one dish trumps the rest. Their ma-po tofu, a simple standard, that likely every Chinese family (let alone restaurant) can prepare, was mediocre at best. Seriously, I could have prepared better from an instant sauce packet! Also, their rice looks like it was soaked in water too long before cooking, causing the grains to burst, giving it a crumbly texture. You can also see remnants of the hull on some grains, indicating low quality. Being located in the middle of nowhere with a general population that doesn't know what good Chinese food tastes like must have it's advantages.

I'm a little biased as this was the first places I ever got chinese take out. Also the first time I ever had General Tso's chicken which was just amazing. Ever since I have been looking for a chinese place that is just as good and am not able to fnd it. I still remember their so-crispy eggrolls, the deep dark rich sauce on the pepper steak and the way two people could eat for a few days on their combo @ $5 each. Every time we are passing through we try to stop for takeout (and then have to eat in the car, as there really are no tables inside). Delicious!!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
